Overall: 30 x 34 x 28 in. (76.2 x 86.4 x 71.1 cm.) Height of seat: 16 1/2 in. (41.9 cm.)
Описание: First manufactured by Knoll in 1952, the welded-steel-rod Diamond armchair by Harry Bertoia added dynamism to modern seating. Its open frame, supporting a grid of smaller diamond shapes, glorified the use of a new industrial material. Bertoia wrote about the graceful design: “My feeling was that it had to come almost from an inward direction. . . . I began to rely once more on my own body. . . . The chairs are studies in space, form, and metal, too.” The continued success of the Diamond armchair is attributable to its seamless melding of aesthetics and practicality, seen in the best mid-century American design.
Continuous diamond-shaped wire frame with central depression forming seat. Four thin, straight, canted tubular steel legs and front stretcher below seat formed from one continuous bent rod that is welded to a continuous tubular, metal squared support. The support in turn supports the seat and is connected by four bolts. Upholstered with polyurethane foam covered by red cotton cloth with conforming central horizontal seam.

Размеры: 29 1/4 x 19 1/2 x 22 3/4 in. (74.3 x 49.5 x 57.8 cm)
Описание: The DCM is one of the most important and influential chairs of the postwar period. Although its official name mundanely refers to its use and materials—dining chair, metal (base)—it is commonly known as the “Potato Chip” chair because of its crisp, curving shapes. Growing out of wartime efforts to create a splint that conformed to the contours of the leg, this chair too is “organic” because its function is to support, and mimic, the shape of the human body.
DCM dining chair of wood and metal. Back and seat are molded, five-ply birch plywood, 5/16" thick, both curved to fit the body and both of trapezoidal form with rounded corners. U-shaped sections of steel tubing form the front and back leg units and the tips of the legs are mounted with rubber pads and metal cups. Front legs are attached to seat with two rubber shock mounts and welded to 7/16" diameter steel rod which curves up from under seat to form the spine connecting seat and back. Rear leg unit welded to spine at curve. Top of spine welded to a horizontal bar which is mounted to the back with two rubber shock mounts.

Год разработки: ca.1960
Материалы: Metal, vinyl
Размеры: 23 x 19 x 19 in. (58.4 x 48.2 x 48.2 cm)
Описание: Stool composed of ovoid padded seat upholstered in yellow vinyl and a metal two-footed pedestal. Seat back is wider than front and curved upward to support human figure. Pedestal base attached under front part of seat with screws (providing cantilevered support) composed of two symmetrical halves aligned with narrow space between them. Together these halves form a columnar rod that angles slightly forward and widens at base; at the base, the rod bends backward and forms two long splayed feet in a "V" shape along the floor. A large metal plate is attached to the underside of the columnar rod where it bends into the feet; plastic floor glides under the metal plate and under each of the two feet of the pedestal.

Материалы: Birch plywood
Размеры: 27 1/8 x 15 x 17 1/2 in. (68.9 x 38.1 x 44.5 cm)
Описание: Fancifully shaped, low side chair in natural finish, cut out birch plywood. The chair is composed of separately articulated parts all fitted together: rear legs/back unit, seat, and two front legs. Rear legs/back unit has horizontal cylinder at top (forms a back support); two closely spaced, parallel pieces of wood extend from this cylinder to the floor; their front edge is straight above the seat, bulges out below the seat (forming a little shelf which helps to support the seat), and then curves back inward to the floor; their back edge slopes gently from the cylinder then straightens out at bottom. These two parallel pieces are joined by horizontal members evenly spaced between the cylinder and seat (open below seat to form two closely spaced rear legs). Seat has straight edge across front, then curves to side and rear (forming "U"). In profile elevation, the two front legs are shaped like trapezoids with top (under seat) wider than bottom (foot), and straight side along front and angled side at back. Stretchers and legs support seat. When the rear legs/back unit is viewed obliquely from the rear, it resembles a Cubist violin or guitar: the cylinder and upper portion resemble the scroll and neck and fingerboard of a violin; the bottom portion resembles a section from the body of the instrument. This unit also has anthropomorphic qualities, looking like a schematized spine with vertebrae.

Although European designers such as Marcel Breuer and Alvar Aalto designed plywood furniture in the 1930s, it was the Americans Charles and Ray Eames, in the years immediately after World War II, who realized the full potential of this material and bent one sheet of plywood in several directions. Komai's chair adds a sophisticated anthropomorphic twist. If you look closely, the chair's design suggests a human face.

Описание: Birch plywood side chair composed of a two piece frame on each side, a seat, back, and a pair of cross braces. The first piece of the side frame: rear legs and back frame (stile) are a single piece of plywood cut into an elongated triangle with the long, flat side along the back and the "point" at the seat; this point bulges out into a ridge to provide a larger area of contact with the seat frame. The second piece of the side frame: front legs and seat frame form an inverted L-shaped piece of plywood with limbs that taper toward the ends. The seat bottom is a solid piece of wood, rounded at the front and curving down at the middle and then curving up toward the rear edge. The seat back consists of a rectangular piece of wood that is basically level with and attached to the upper part of the side frame. Cross braces of a round, solid dowel connect each side of the frame just below the front and rear edges of the seat. All the screwed attachments of parts covered originally with wooden screw-like plugs, several replaced with wood filler.

Solid chair with strong sense of (irregular) geometry, somewhat Biedermeier character or inspiration. Wooden frame of chair rises to a flat-topped arch along top, and wraps around the seat to form sides and armrests. Sides curve up and outward from seat, and are rolled over to form scroll-like armrests. Wide, flat front stiles joined to the continuous chair back / sides at right angle and conform to curve and scroll of armrests. Stiles continue and widen into blocky front legs, outer edge of leg flares out to form trapezoidal shape; ebonized round rod applied to outer edge of front legs from the seat rail to floor. Chair has two blocky, splayed back legs. Horizontal seat rails join the legs. Frame decorated with ebonized inlay: two small circles in center of scroll form at top of front stiles, and regularly spaced triangles along front seat rail. Seat is a trapezoid shape, tapering toward back and fitted with thick cushion. Sides and seat back are upholstered and divided into five sections with piping; upholstering continues over rounded top edges to cover the outer sides and back of chair. All seams and seat cushion edges marked with piping.
