Finding Antique Stoves
Your 1950s-style kitchen sounds great, and a vintage or new retro-styled red stove would certainly make a statement.
There are a number of companies that offer vintage-inspired appliances. One in particular that you may want to consider is Elmira Stove Works, www.elmirastoveworks.com. It offers a full line of antique-styled ranges, refrigerators, microwaves and wall ovens, but it has one stove that seems made to order for you: Elmira's Northstar 1950s-styled "retro" stove. It comes in Candy Red, but the company will custom-paint your range in your favorite color, should you want Fire Engine Red instead. This stove in an electric version is about $3,795 and in gas is about $4,095. Call (800) 295-8498 for more information and to find a dealer near you.
Another resource not to be overlooked is Heartland's line of antique-inspired appliances. Its Legacy line has the feel of 1930s design, which might appeal to you as well. Check these appliances out at www.heartlandapp.com or call (800) 361-1517.
I cook on a vintage range -- and love it -- but I have to admit that I do miss the self-cleaning option that new stoves offer. Plus, the added warranty that comes with them gives a sense of security if something were to malfunction.
If you're interested in a vintage range, you can do an Internet search for "Antique Stoves" and find a handful of reputable companies that sell restored antique stoves. They will ship the stove to you or, if you're lucky enough to live near one of the companies, you can pick it up yourself. I had mine shipped to me and found the price of shipping to be nominal.
Check out www.antiquestoves.com. I have personally worked with the owner and antique stove restorer, Ed Semmelroth. Ed has a wealth of information on the subject of antique stoves, and the quality and care he puts into restoring them is quite admirable.
One suggestion before buying a vintage stove: Make sure the valves have been taken apart, cleaned, regreased and pressure-tested to ensure proper flow of gas to your cleaned burners -- the key to a stove's performance.
Good luck with your search.
